I Talk Jesus
Published on December 5, 2005 By AvantiTexan In Religion
Being an American missionary in a European country, politics is a topic that is brought up nearly daily. It is also a topic that I tried to avoid at (nearly) all cost. I do this for several reasons.

1.Most of the political discussions revolve around the current war and the reasons behind it. I do not know the answers to those questions, all I have is speculation, which is all they have. Therefore the conversation is often more destructive than it is constructive.

2.Most of the political news they get is very one-sided, the major channels are all partied owned. Not saying that what they hear and know has no truth to it, but that they don’t see any of the other side. There is such a large gap in information that I just cannot fill.

3.From my experience, the people here are very politically minded and hold very strong to their beliefs. They are not asking your opinion to see another side or to debate the topic to come to the right conclusion, they are asking for you opinion to see if you agree with them and if not, to make you.

4.This is the big one. I am not here as an Ambassador of America the Great or of George W. I am here as an Ambassador of Jesus Christ. Political discussions are usually counter productive in the shadow of the cross.

Therefore, when I am asked my opinion of George W. or Iraq, or America’s thirst for power, oil or whatever, I simply reply like this:

I’m not here to talk politics; I’m here to talk about Jesus. What is your opinion of him?

Nice blog, Jeremy.

I didn't realize that Italians were so interested in US politics. Learn something new everyday, hehe.

But I'm not here to talk Italians; I'm here to talk about Santa Claus. What is your opinion of him?

Yeah, they are very interested in US politics, especially the war and Bush, oh and capital punishment (that comes up alot because they think Texans shot people who steal bumble gum). In many aspects I agree with them, but overall I would rather not engage anyone on the politics issue, while I may connect with that one person, I am closing the door to another. Just not worth the trade to me.

(I would put a really cool smiley here, but the smiley buttons are gone)... Personally, I think he is a jolly 'ole fellow who better stop kissing my mom or else my grandma will high jack his reigndeer and run over all the elves.

Whenever you debate, you should just assume the missionary position.

Good piece, Jeremy.

I struggled with the conflict of faith vs. politics for many years. As a matter of fact, when I came onto JoeUser, I initially intended to cover religious topics vs. politics. But, in my case, the political articles were being read, the religious ones were not, and I quickly discovered that maybe my calling's more in the religious arena than the political. Since the chief content of my blog is political, I try to avoid many religious discussions for the same reasons. No sense muddying the waters with offtopic controversial issues.

We don't?

I think that's a very mature view of it. It's tempting, when there is something that you feel passionately about, to share your thoughts, but sometimes it just adds unneeded tension.

A while back I was talking with an Officer in Adrian's company...we get along really well, she's a sweetie, and she LOVES the boys. The conversation started veering toward politics, and I could tell that she and I didn't see eye to eye on it, so I had to restrain myself, haha. It wasn't worth the awkwardness and disagreement.

You think Gran-Gran's really that sadistic? Hehe.

Nice.

Thanks!

I struggle with a similar issue. Since I am just getting started writing here, I have to figure out where I want to "make my niche" so to speak.

Totally agree. This is true for so many other subjects in life too. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. Merry Christmas!

I was going on the case study in which mom did not shoot Matt for stealing bubble gum at the store....

Bravo. It's a very hard lesson to learn (still learning it) that we can't always blurt out what we think and feel to others, especially if we have daily contact with them or have to work with them. I guess it is alot in my personality now, but I love peace, and will do just about anything to see that it occurs (which isn't always a good thing).
