We have, twice...
Published on December 23, 2005 By AvantiTexan In Misc

This time, we are actually going to leave. Not what we want to do, but it is what we need to do. Or should I say, must do.

About two months ago my wife and I went to pick up our paperwork that allows us to stay in Italy at the state police office. It was the second time for us to do our paperwork here in Italy, so it was just a renewal of a permission to stay in the country. We thought we had covered all the bases and were 100% confident to receive our renewal papers. Apparently we counted our documents before they crossed the stamping line.

To make a long story short, we were denied the renewal and asked to leave the country within 15 days. That same day we decided to consult a lawyer on the issue and we sent out a distress signal to all our Italian and American contacts that we have.

Seven days later…

We know somebody, who knows somebody that is high up in the state police force. That person called the police here and that same day they decided to review our paperwork. They said come back in 10 days.

10 days later…

We return, paperwork still not done, asked to return in another 10 days…

14 days later we return, the paperwork is finished and they have denied the renewal once again. They reinstated the 15 days to leave the country and that is where we are now. Actually we are at 14 days and counting.

The problem is that we have to leave all European Union countries. We have to return to the states and renew all our paperwork. All we have now is a valid passport, our visas are expired as well as our permission to stay in the country. Therefore, we are heading home.

We hope to return to Italy within six weeks, perhaps that is optimistic, but we don’t want to be out of the work and country too long. At least we have some resolution and a direction in which to go, and for that we are very thankful.

We don’t know why God wants us to leave momentarily, or why he has put us through this struggle. However, we are confident that he is still in control and we rely on his peace to guide us through the storm.

Wow, how will this affect your job? I mean, you are in Italy working, aren't you? And they expect you to be available, don't they? Hope nothing bad comes down on you because of this setback.
Good luck and I hope your visa issues get sorted quickly.

No, I haven't ever been told or asked to leave a country. I can't begin to imagine what you're going through!

Wherever you are or go, a very Merry Christmas to you and I hope all works out well for you!

Wow, how will this affect your job?

Well, we are missionaries supported from the states, so it's not like a 9 to 5 job. I will have to find some one to step in for me in my absence.
Good luck and I hope your visa issues get sorted quickly.

Thanks! Me too. : )

It's pretty nuts, more than I could have ever imagined myself!

Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you too!

I thought that was what you were doing.  Sorry for the hassles.  I hope it works out well.

Nope but I've only been in another country once when I was nine, I went to Mexico. That's the extent of my international travels. I hope everything works out for you.

What do those Italians think making you leave? Maybe they just wanted a bribe. Maybe you need to make them an offer they can't refuse. ha ha. I know I'm stereotyping.

I'm sure your family will be thrilled to see you though.

We'll be praying for you and Amanda! Isn't it interesting what God gives to us sometimes? Christmas in the states...nice, eh?

Perhaps you will be needed here in the next six weeks. Or perhaps this is a rest before something big you just don't know about yet.

Enjoy your transition time because God is anything but BORING!

Well, my only International adventures have been to Puerto Rico, which is where I am ATM. Although Puerto Rico is a self-governing commonwealth in associated with the United State, we are consider American Citizens and there for don't need passports, green cards or a permisiion to stay. We go and come to and from the US as we please. Well I am American since I was born in NJ.

It's for reasons like what you explain and many others that I chose not to travel beyond US borders. To me the chances of getting in trouble just like you are in outweigh any reason for me to go. That's just me. Interesting enough it seems that Puerto Rico may not last long they way it is and will most likely need passports as well. Oh well, I guess mom will have to talk to me by phone or see photos.

Wow, that's realy annoying! I hope everything works out. It must be pretty scary to be in a situation like that. I'll be praying for you!

Before I came overseas, that was the only other country I had been to. We only spent a week there, but it was great! Where did you go?
Maybe they just wanted a bribe. Maybe you need to make them an offer they can't refuse.

ha ha ha! Actually...that thought did cross our minds. The bureaucracy in Italy is really crazy, most of the time they don't even know all the rules and regs of their own country, then tack on the rules and regs from the European Union, and you have a mess! We should have offered to teach them American! ha
I'm sure your family will be thrilled to see you though.

Yeah, when I told them, they were like, "oh, I'm so sorry etc..." but I know they were jumping for joy inside. I too am happy to see them; I just wish the circumstances were different.

Every day’s an adventure! : )
Christmas in the states...nice, eh?

Almost, we won't be leaving until after New Year's, but at least it's still in the holiday season (I am a little sad that I will miss all the bowl games though...)

That's one thing that I am a little afraid of. I pray that we will be needed in the states for a good/happy/joyous reason and not because something bad is going to happen...I had never thought about the rest scenario before, to be honest, we are pretty tired, in many ways.
Enjoy your transition time because God is anything but BORING!

Thanks, and you are so right!

It took me a while to understand what you were saying, I was like, hey, this guy is an ATM, maybe I should ask him for some money! ha ha
We go and come to and from the US as we please.

That's awesome. I didn't know all that about Puerto Rico, pretty cool though, maybe we should go there!
It's for reasons like what you explain and many others that I chose not to travel beyond US borders.

From all the people I know over here, I can honestly say, that the problems that we are having are part of an exception. It isn't the norm. That being said, I can see what you mean. Laws change and nobody is advised, you don't know exactly what documents you need to do what etc. It can be a headache.

Wow, that's really annoying!

Can I quote you on that? he he That's exactly what were are thinking!
I hope everything works out. It must be pretty scary to be in a situation like that. I'll be praying for you!

Thanks, it is scary in one sense, but in another, I am really not afraid, at least in regards to what the Italian government can do to me. Thanks for the prayers.

I'm just curious and I hope you take no offense at this question

No offense taken! : )
but why Italy in the first place

Here is the short reply - My wife and I were interested in foreign missions and there is a missions training program based in Florence, so we decided to come to Italy.
Are your efforts there an attempt to draw people away from the Catholic church?

Our efforts are to simply preach the truth of the gospel; I personally preach no "church" or creed other than what we have exemplified in the New Testament. My efforts are to draw people to Jesus.
If so, I can see why the government *might* want you gone, because they don't have the same sort of church/state separation that America does.

Since Vatican Council II, I believe, all protestants are considered "separated brothers" instead of an enemy to the Catholic Church. I do not believe with any once of my body that this is a result of religious persecution. There are many protestant groups that have interns come from the states all the time here in this city. The government doesn't have any problem with this. If anything I felt that the police here have bent over (maybe not completely backwards) to help us out and give us the benefit of the doubt.
I'm still sorry that you are being forced to leave a place that you'd prefer to remain in, and I wish you a safe trip and a satisfying resolution to the problem.

Thanks!

You are correct!  Those secure in their religion do not object or are afraid of anyone's message.  And as I have said, we have different flavors of christianity because one size does not fit all.
